Chucumite is a group that performs “Son Jarocho” music of southern Veracruz, Mexico, using traditional instruments which derived from baroque instruments of the XVI century. The Arpa Jarocha, or Veracruz folk harp, Jarana Jarocha, a small guitar type instrument native to Veracruz, the Requinto Jarocho, similar to the jarana but having four strings which are plucked with a pick of cowhorn and the Leona, a large form of the requinto jarocho which is used to play bass lines. These accompany the traditional call-and-response singing style which evolved from African roots. Chucumite seeks to share the rich tradition of the son jarocho with diverse audiences and thus create not only musical harmony, but harmony between cultures.
