About Iona Fyfe

Iona Fyfe is a celebrated folksinger from Aberdeenshire, recognized as one of Scotland’s finest vocalists deeply rooted in the singing traditions of the North East. In 2021, she made history by becoming the first singer to win the coveted title of Musician of the Year at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards. A fierce advocate for the official recognition of the Scots language, Iona led a successful campaign to pressure Spotify into acknowledging Scots as an official language. Her dedication to preserving and promoting her cultural heritage earned her the Speaker of the Year title at the Scots Language Awards in 2021. She performs both folk and pop songs in Scots, maintaining a strong connection to her traditional roots while exploring contemporary musical styles.

In addition to her advocacy work, Iona has built an impressive musical career, featuring in esteemed publications such as The Sunday Post, The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Times. She has performed extensively across the UK and internationally, collaborating with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and achieving sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Iona’s discography includes her critically acclaimed debut album “Away From My Window” and the 2019 EP “Dark Turn of Mind,” which blends Appalachian and Aberdeenshire ballads. With a first-class honours degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and extensive media appearances, Iona Fyfe continues to be a significant figure in both the traditional music scene and the broader cultural landscape of Scotland.
