Melissa was raised here in Ventura and always loved dance from a young age. At age12 she devoted herself to ballet and began dancing six days a week, studying the Vaganova method. She performed every year in the Nutcracker Ballet and various performances and auditioned for summer dance intensives at ballet companies all over the US. She trained in the summer programs of Cleveland Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, American Ballet Theatre, and San Francisco Ballet. She attended Brigham Young University on scholarship for ballet and graduated with a major in Recreation Management and Youth Leadership.  She stopped dancing for 15 years, raising children and suffering from the unfortunate belief that she was too old to dance anymore. At age 37 she decided to dip her toe back in right as the pandemic hit in 2020.  Coming to the realization that she can still enjoy dancing as an adult and she can help others do the same, Melissa began teaching ballet out of her garage. She loved it so much that she decided to open Melissa Kay Ballet to teach dancers of all ages with the goal of teaching proper technique with encouragement and to have high standards without all the psychological baggage that attended much of the ballet training she received. She welcomes adults who have taken long breaks from dancing to try again and reclaim ballet for themselves in a more positive way.
